Bedrock Robotics nears $1B in total funding as demand for autonomous heavy equipment surges

San Francisco-based Bedrock Robotics has raised $600 million in Series C funding, co-led by CapitalG and Emergence Capital, at a $4.1 billion valuation. The round brings its total funding to nearly $1 billion as it scales fully autonomous heavy equipment to address nationwide construction labor shortages.

The round included new investors US Innovative Technology Fund (USIT), Bessemer Venture Partners, and Temasek, alongside existing investors 8VC, Georgian, Valor Equity Partners, Xora, Eclipse, Perry Creek Capital, NVIDIA, and others. Bedrock said this will accelerate the deployment of Bedrock-equipped machines across commercial construction sites across the U.S., helping contractors use existing heavy equipment more safely, predictably, and at greater capacity.

The new capital follows a rapid commercial expansion beyond the company ’s initial footprint in the West and Central South into the Midwest and South Atlantic. Anchored by a major partnership with Southwest contractor Haydon to automate earthwork in Texas, Bedrock has added regional partners across Minnesota, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, and Virginia—pushing its autonomous retrofits onto live job sites spanning data centers, healthcare facilities, and heavy civil infrastructure.

“We have proven that fully autonomous excavators can perform real work of value alongside the crews and workflows already in place on job sites,” said Boris Sofman, co-founder and CEO of Bedrock Robotics. “The next challenge is delivering that capability to more contractors as a dependable part of how projects get built.”

“This funding allows us to expand deployments, strengthen the field operations behind every machine, and work with more partners as they integrate intelligent systems into everyday work,” he added. “The opportunity is to help the industry’s experienced crews safely take on more projects, deliver with greater consistency, and quickly deliver more of the infrastructure this country needs.”

Sofman told The Robot Report , “New customer demand is very high. We’re responsibly growing into the demand, bringing on new customers we can serve alongside our longtime design partners. We’re scaling across the board, from operations to hardware to supply chain operations, to keep pace with the needs of our customers.”

Bedrock Robotics adds leadership

In the midst of securing new funding, the company also added two new individuals to the management team.

Amy Jones Satrom joins the leadership team as vice president of operations. She brings operations experience from Amazon, Nuro, and Uber to lead the company in the next phase of scaling to meet demand.

“Amy is instrumental in strengthening our operations and building the systems and support that make successful deployments repeatable,” according to Sofman. “She’s still early in her tenure, but her leadership will be central to growing our deployment and production teams and preparing them to support customers across the country.

“Ajay Gummalla, a co-founder and VP of engineering, is also intimately involved on the hardware side of things, adding resilience to our supply chain so we’re ready to build the hardware we need to meet customer demand,” he explained.

Lando Juarez has joined Bedrock Robotics in the role of general counsel. He was formerly head of legal for Uber’s Autonomous Mobility & Delivery business, overseeing commercial partnerships and regulatory pathways.

Looking to the future of construction

When asked bout how the company is planning to grow, Sofman responded, “Short term, our growth market remains construction. It is a massive market — 4% to 5% of U.S. GDP — so we’re thinking about expanding use cases. Haydon will test our excavators for autonomous trench work.”

“We’re also thinking about automating larger machine models — Haydon and others will explore bulldozers, ADTs, and wheel loaders as possible heavy machines to automate next,” he said. “Long term: We’re looking at the other industries, like mining and agriculture, that are 1) also dealing with labor constraints and 2) use the same kinds of heavy machines GCs do.”

“For 2027, we are relentlessly focused on getting more Bedrock-equipped machines on more job sites around the country,” Sofman continued. “It was just a few months ago that we first launched fully autonomous excavators on live, commercial job sites, just two years after Bedrock came out of stealth. 2027 is about doubling down on that progress, getting to triple-digit machines working autonomously across the country.”

When asked about the installed base and economic opportunity for Bedrock Robotics’ systems, Sofman was more reserved.

“It’s a bit early to give concrete numbers,” said Sofman, “However, given the labor constraints on general contractors, the math pencils out: Imagine a job that can be completed two months faster because autonomous machines are running around the clock, seven days a week.”

“The developer paying 9% interest on a $400 million loan would save $6 million on that project they can invest into future projects,” he observed. “In turn, construction crews and all the downstream trades, like plumbing and electrical, would see an increasing volume of steady work because there are more projects that can be funded.”

Some data on labor constraints that have opened the market for Bedrock:

Twenty percent of construction workers are over the age of 55, and estimates suggest that more than 40% of the construction workers will retire in the next five years.

Large projects already run an average of 20% over schedule and 80% over budget.

In construction specifically, 87% of firms report openings for hourly craft positions, and 88% say the roles are as hard or harder to fill than a year ago.
